Discovering the Hidden Avian Treasures: A Journey to Find Lost Species

In an uplifting twist of fate, the elusive Santa Marta sabrewing, a bird shrouded in mystery and seldom seen, reemerged in Colombia in 2022, reigniting hope among conservationists. This incredible sighting is part of the broader narrative of the Search for Lost Birds initiative, an international collaboration among various conservation groups dedicated to protecting our feathered friends.

More than 120 bird species were previously thought to be lost, having not been observed or documented in their natural habitats for over a decade. The Search for Lost Birds initiative invites the public to participate in documenting and sharing insights about these absent species, harnessing the power of everyday individuals to provide crucial information. Despite the serious threat of extinction facing many species, the project has already seen encouraging outcomes, with 15 previously missing species brought back into the spotlight since its launch in 2021.

Among the notable rediscoveries is the Long-billed bush warbler, which disappeared from sightings in 1977 but was joyfully spotted again in 2022, thanks to the tireless efforts of birdwatcher James Eaton. Another remarkable comeback is that of the Black-naped pheasant-pigeon, which had not been seen since 1896, yet was recently photographed by an international team led by Indigenous hunters.

The Santa Marta sabrewing, missing since 2010, was recently observed in Colombia’s majestic mountains, flaunting its stunning emerald feathers in a captivating display. Likewise, the Dusky tetraka, which had not been spotted since 1999, was rediscovered in the lush rainforests of Madagascar, underscoring the crucial role conservation plays in maintaining biodiversity.

Additionally, the Urich’s tyrannulet—an uncommon flycatcher believed to have vanished after 2005—was rediscovered in Venezuela in 2021, thanks to the keen eye of ornithologist David Ascanio, who managed to capture groundbreaking photos and recordings of its distinctive call.
