This color change was likely due to volcanic ash and gases scattering sunlight in unexpected ways.

While early theories suggested that the eruption originated from volcanoes in the Philippines or near Sicily, recent studies have pinpointed the Zavaritskii caldera on the uninhabited island of Simushir in Russia’s Far East as the likely source.
