SELF-HELP LITERATURE can often feel like a harsh critique of our lives, but there are those that offer genuine guidance through the author’s personal experiences. Veteran rapper Big Sean seeks to do just that in his latest release, Go Higher: Five Practices For Purpose, Success, and Inner Peace.

“Sharing your journey can create a vivid narrative,” Sean remarked. “When you aim to internalize a new mindset, I believe the fastest route is to connect with your heart.”

In his book, Sean candidly discusses how he turned to therapy during a peak moment in his music career, realizing that he was using Adderall as a way to escape his emotional turmoil. This pivotal period prompted him to establish a comprehensive wellness routine aimed at healing. We had the opportunity to chat with the Detroit-born artist about his transformative journey, how he utilized that healing in his writing—both in music and this new book.

MEN’S HEALTH: Your book touches on your initial encounter with what felt like a depressive episode. When did you come to understand that this was more than just a temporary low?

BIG SEAN: I was anxiously awaiting a response from Ye about signing with his label, and I was completely unaware of the turmoil within. I simply knew that I felt off. It’s often said that hindsight brings clarity, and looking back, I see it now as one of my first major challenges. I had invested everything into this dream and had to remind myself that I would find a way, even if it wasn’t how I had envisioned it.

Fortunately, I had a solid support system in my family. My grandmother served as a Black captain in World War II and was a beacon of spirituality and resilience, always crafting something from nothing. My mother embodies that spirit as well. They consistently encouraged me to believe in the possibility of manifesting my music career.

During that difficult period, I learned that just because circumstances are challenging doesn’t mean I can’t choose joy. By shifting my mindset, everything else began to change. I wrote this book with the intention of reaching those who might be feeling similarly lost.

MH: What prompted you to seek help from a therapist?

BS: There comes a point in every person’s journey where they face a significant obstacle, and it can be agonizing. This often occurs between the ages of 29 and 34, when life can shift dramatically. I think it’s part of entering your 30s. You realize that you need to reconnect with your true self, which can be daunting. You might find yourself reflecting, “I’m not the person I used to be, and that’s disappointing.”

For many, doing this alone is challenging. We are not solitary beings; we belong to a community and can draw from the experiences of others. Some may offer insights that could benefit you, and sometimes even a small piece of advice can make a significant difference. My experience with therapy has been incredibly positive, and I encourage everyone to give it a shot if they can. Not every therapist will be the perfect fit, similar to finding a great barber—it may take some time to find the right one. But the benefits can be substantial, and it offers a space to vent without the baggage of family or friends.

I even inspired my father, who at 75, decided to try therapy. Growing up in Monroe, Louisiana, during the Civil Rights era, he faced considerable struggles, including violence for simply being in the wrong place. Through therapy, he discovered that his stuttering might have stemmed from his past trauma. My point is, even if you think you’re fine, there’s no harm in seeking help.

MH: Your story includes a very public battle with Adderall addiction. What insights did that recovery provide you about yourself?

BS: It illuminated the fact that each individual’s journey is unique. My addiction was tearing me apart from within. While some people genuinely need Adderall for their health, I felt compelled to share my story because I wasn’t using it as prescribed. I’m grateful I recognized the need to stop. Addiction can cloud your judgment, and I vividly remember a day in the studio when I found myself out of drugs and felt utterly despondent—that was my wake-up call.

After quitting, it took a long time for me to regain any sense of joy or inspiration. I had to commit to personal development. I realized the interconnectedness of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health. I became determined to work out, which enhanced my clarity of thought, improved my mood, and rebuilt my self-esteem.

Additionally, journaling became a vital tool for me, allowing me to articulate my thoughts and intentions. My belief in a higher power and the significance of that connection guided my meditation practice. Together, meditation and journaling provided me with clarity and helped set the tone for my day.

I strive to maintain these practices in my daily life, adjusting them as necessary to fit my schedule. For me, consistency is crucial.

In my music, I delve into themes of self-discovery and mental health. Tracks like “Black Void” and “ZTFO” reflect different facets of my journey. “Black Void” symbolizes growth and rediscovery, while “ZTFO” captures the joy of connecting with oneself. Prioritizing self-care is never wasted effort; it’s essential to carve out time for activities like reading, journaling, and meditation to reconnect with your true self.

Ultimately, it’s about returning to your core and achieving inner peace. Embracing the process of self-improvement and discovery should be both enjoyable and rewarding. So, take the opportunity to unwind and prioritize your well-being.
