Red Bull Parts Ways with Sergio Pérez After Challenging Season
In a significant shake-up, Red Bull Racing has announced its decision to part ways with Sergio Pérez following a season that did not meet expectations in Formula One. Pérez, who joined the squad in 2021, faced increasing scrutiny as the races unfolded, ultimately finishing a staggering 285 points behind his teammate, Max Verstappen. This performance contributed to Red Bull’s loss of the constructors’ championship title to McLaren.
Meanwhile, Verstappen celebrated his fourth consecutive drivers’ world title, while Pérez found it difficult to make a notable impact, ending the season in eighth place in the overall standings. In a particularly tough stretch, Pérez did not manage to secure a top-five finish in his last 18 races with the team, underscoring the difficulties he faced throughout the season.
Pérez expressed his appreciation for his time at Red Bull, stating, “I am truly thankful for the past four years with Oracle Red Bull Racing and for the opportunity to be part of such a remarkable team. My time with Red Bull has been an unforgettable journey, filled with achievements that I will always hold dear. We set records, reached incredible milestones, and I had the honor of meeting so many wonderful individuals along the way.”
In the wake of Pérez’s departure, reports indicate that New Zealand’s Liam Lawson is in line to step into his shoes at Red Bull. The 22-year-old has already made 11 race appearances with the team’s sister organization, RB, showcasing his potential for the top-tier team.
Christian Horner, the team principal, candidly addressed Pérez’s performance, noting its impact on the team’s championship aspirations. He acknowledged Pérez’s valuable contributions in previous seasons, emphasizing his role in securing constructors’ titles and his support of Verstappen during crucial races.
“Although Checo will not be racing for us next season, he will always remain a beloved team member and an essential part of our legacy. Thank you, Checo,” Horner stated in a heartfelt farewell to Pérez.
